As anybody should be, we’re huge fans of the Golf GTI. This performance-oriented version of the iconic VW Golf is enough for any sports car or hot hatch enthusiast to get excited about, but a new competitor has risen through the ranks in recent years. This high-performance variant makes a great competitor for the GTI, so we thought we’d see how our favorite hot hatch measures up against the newest version of this model.
In fact, despite the fact that exact specifications haven’t yet been released, we figured it’d be best just to see how it compares to the upcoming version by pitting the 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI against the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N.

Advantages of the 2020 Golf GTI
As we mentioned, precise specs haven’t yet been announced for the upcoming 2021 Hyundai Veloster N, so for the purposes of this chart we utilized the specs of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec, the next best performing model in the nameplate’s family. We imagine its horsepower and fuel efficiency will be improved for the new model, though we don’t know for sure. And we imagine its cargo capacity will be roughly the same.
Analyzing the table row by row against these predictions, the 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI has some pretty big advantages across the board, as long as the Veloster N model’s official specifications aren’t completely mind-blowing. However, the Veloster N does have an advantage of its own. In the first row we looked at power, which the Golf GTI delivers 27 horsepower more than the Veloster Turbo R-Spec. We imagine that advantage might be diminished, but not completely abolished by the Veloster N.
However, the Veloster N is already sure to offer superior fuel efficiency consider the Veloster Turbo R-Spec achieves two extra miles per gallon combined across highway and city driving. Assuming the layout of the vehicle is the same, the Golf GTI also offers a much bigger hatchback area, offering 2.9 cubic feet of extra space. Plus, the Volkswagen Golf offers an extra seat in the middle of the rear row.
