If you are a frequent traveler, or even just an intermittent one, it’s helpful to have some tips about saving money when renting a car. The ability to rent a vehicle for a set amount of time when you’re away from home is an unbelievably convenient thing to do. You obviously can’t just pack up your car on a plane and you need a way to get around when you get to your destination, so renting a car makes perfect sense. Check out some ways you can save next time you rent a car.

Three ways to save money when renting a car

Avoid the airport if possible

It doesn’t get much more convenient than renting a car right at the airport. You land, you get off the tarmac, you go to the rental car desk, you pick out a car, and you leave. That extra convenience is used as justification for significant price hikes. If you can find a way to a rental car dealership that is off the airport grounds, you will save money. Take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft from the airport to a nearby rental agency and thank us later.

Don’t go for the add-ons

Unless you plan on renting your car for an extended period of time, there isn’t much of a point of getting fancy features. Yes, modern technologies make our vehicles cooler and more exciting, but most people only rent a car for a few days or a couple weeks at most. Save yourself unnecessary fees and strive for minimalism. This is not to say that you should go for the cheapest option available. Treat yourself and get something you will enjoy, but consider what features are superfluous for a rental car.

Find discounts and coupons

This one is huge. Not only should you ask the agency about discounts they offer, you should pore over the internet looking for coupons. There are discounts specifically for hybrid vehicles, drivers who drive fewer than a certain number of miles, and just about anything else you can think of. If you do just a few minutes of online research, you will save quite a bit of cash next time you rent a car.
