Taking care of your car can feel like an intensive process. There are so many things you have to keep track of, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. It is even more confusing and frustrating if you aren’t really a car person. When you need to have work done on your car, it’s almost like the technicians are talking in a different language.

There are a lot of reasons you might end up in the service center, but it feels stressful regardless of the reason. It is made worse if you need parts replaced and swapped out. It’s easy to feel lost when they start talking about OEM and aftermarket parts. We’ll help you try to sort through all of the jargon.

Genuine Parts versus Aftermarket Parts

Some service centers might ask you if you prefer OEM or genuine parts or if you are fine with using aftermarket parts. You might wonder what that means if this is your first big car bill. When something needs to be replaced in your car, there are essentially two different categories of parts to choose from. Genuine or OEM parts are generally the best option. These are parts that come straight from a vehicle’s manufacturer and are designed for a specific car. OEM parts are generally more expensive, however.

Aftermarket parts are a bit broader in scope. These parts come from third-party manufacturers and aren’t designed for any specific vehicle. The general nature of these parts means they can be more affordable. If you have a newer car, then using aftermarket parts could void your warranty. It’s important to be careful with any repair.
